Diamond Facts 2004/05
NWT Diamond Industry Report

The Occurrence and Origin of Diamonds
By Edgar George Pye (Canadian Rockhound Geological Magazine )

Diamonds are the most beautiful, most brilliant, hardest, and most-desired of all gem minerals. The word "diamond" conjures up different things depending on one's interests and point of view. But what is diamond? Where is it found? How does it occur in the natural environment and how was it formed? This article attempts to answer these and other questions for the curious individual whose familiarity with the gem is limited to the engagement ring and other jewellery.

Trivia: Diamonds are rare: an average of 350 tons of ore must be mined and processed to find an uncut diamond large enough to cut a
single one-carat polished diamond. Of all the diamonds mined,
only 20 percent are even suitable for jewelry.

Largest Diamond ever discovered? The Cullinan Diamond is the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered. Found in 1905, the original 3,100 carats were cut to make jewels for the British Crown Jewels and the British Royal family's collection.
