COMPUTER TIP OF THE DAY
The
Two-faced Windows Calculator
Windows XP Home, Media or Professional
If you've used the Windows Calculator (Start--->All
Programs--->Accessories-->Calculator), and you're into
some heavy-duty calculating, you probably thought
Windows calculator, was, well, pretty pathetic. But,
digiknow, the Windows Calculator has another face? Yes
it does, and it can do very complex calculations. I
know, I know, many of you are like Thundercloud and
wouldn't know a co-sine from an algorithm but some of
you are like Eightball, who's just one card shy of being
a mathematical Einstein. So for those of you who think
mathematics is the primordial force in the universe
around which everything else revolves, and better than
even than peanut butter and strawberry jam, you'll
probably get a lot of use out of Windows Calculator's
other face :-)
You see, by default, the Calculator starts up in
Standard Mode, but you can switch to Scientific Mode
from the view menu. Just click on View, and then click
Scientific (Thundercloud shudders at the scientific
view!). This gives you a much more functional calculator
that can handle computations in decimal, binary, hex,
and octal. It also offers many other advanced features
such as statistical calculations. And, you may want to
read the help file for advice on how to use them
properly. Of course, if you're like me, you probably
won't understand the help file either - but if you're
like treading on the cusp of genius like Eightball, you
probably won't need the help file because you'll
understand what all this stuff does!
Also, if you're really into this sort of thing, you can
choose Digit Grouping (from the "View" menu) which will
insert commas when calculating in decimal, and spaces
when calculating in hex. This makes it much easier to
read.

were the first to fly over the North Pole.
Today's Word "bombinate" \BOM-buh-nayt\ (intransitive
verb) - To buzz; to hum; to drone.

early hours of the morning."
Bombinate is from Late Latin bombinatus, past participle
of bombinare, alteration of Latin bombilare, from bombus,
