Gem and Mineral Show

The Haileybury School of Mines, Northern College Gangue-sters Rock & Mineral Club hosted their annual Mineral Show on Saturday March 29 in the gynasium of the College. Don Hillier remarked that the overall attendance was expected to be up over 300 this year probably due to the late arrival of Spring. The Sudbury Rock Club had several very interesting and impressive collections and specimens available for sale.  There was a silent auction running throughout the day and many door prizes drawn as well. The show was very much a success this year and hopefully will return next year bigger and better. It was a great way to spend the day and learn about minerals and meet some very nice people.

Visitors starting to check out the displays

Ruth Debicki showed me a very ornate piece of quartz from Brazil. Her and her husband Ed had quite a few new samples up for grabs this year.

Al Cowan, a newcomer from Sudbury showed me a wonderful piece of petrified wood from Arizona. He had a variety of items on display for sale at his tables, jewelry, polished stones and antique items.

Treasure hunters showing their discoveries.

Roger Smirle showed me how the different minerals fluoresce under the black light. He and his wife had many samples of amethyst and novelty items as well.

Tessy Meunier showed her collection of nature items (bugs, butterflies and leaves). I was very impressed with this wooden burl which she dug out of the ground which uncannily resembles Winnie the Pooh in a tree.
