THE COBALT CAMP -"OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW"

By :  R.A. Gilson        Apr. 17, 2001

Local Liberal MPP, David Ramsey has joined the hunt for the missing pieces of the puzzle of Outcrop's rediscovered 800 carat Nipissing Diamond and he's been doing a fine job.
To date, MPP Ramsey points out an article in the Jeweller's Circular weekly V.52#26P.56 and dated August 1, 1906, which in part, reads as follows," The Rev. Father Paradis, who is well-known throughout eastern Canada for the work he has done in making known the resources of the Lake Temiskaming country, was at the Canadian Pacific Railway Co.'s offices in Montreal last week and brought the news that Adolphe O. Aubin, who represents the Nipissing West in the Ontario Legislature, has in his possession, a stone, which is believed to be one of the largest diamonds known. I myself, have seen the stone. it is as large as a hen's egg, and has a rough surface and a yellowish tinge. All the usual tests have been applied to it and if these tests are infallible, then it certainly is a diamond. Father Paradis pointed out that if this stone is a diamond, it will be one of the largest in the world."

DIAMOND (?) DISCOVERY IN THE NIPISSING DISTRICT
These were the headlines for the Mining Journal, Sept. 22, 1906.P.333. This article contained much of the information read above. But, in this article, Rev. Father Paradis drew a sketch of the Nipissing Diamond, which in actual size is the size of a large hen's egg.

All the articles were vague, perhaps intentionally, regarding the specific location of the find. In 1906, there were more than 10,000 miners (prospectors) in the northeastern Ontario, Cobalt area, which was a strong incentive to keep the location secret. Several articles placed the find very close to Cobalt, in the Lake Temiskaming area.
The Rev. Father Paradis had his mission on Mission Point on Lake Temiskaming in Lorrain Twp. District of Nipissing in 1906. Lorrain Twp. would become part of the District of Temiskaming in 1912.

Liberal MPP, David Ramsey is continuing his search for the pieces of the missing puzzle while Outcrop Explorations and PrairieC believe the 800 carat Diamond originated from their new diamond discovery area last fall in Lorrain Township. The only other known potential source could be on Outcrop's claims in Gillies Limit, adjoining Lorrain to the northwest.

The diamond potential in Bucke Township to the north is considered too young in age to host such a diamond. The diamond and PGM potential of the Cobalt Camp as well as other areas in northeastern Ontario will be discussed and the Annual Northeastern Ontario Mineral Symposium on April 17 and 18, 2001.

Shortly thereafter, Outcrop and PrairieC may have many new suitors and the famed old Cobalt Camp will have a new lease on life to investigate its Diamond, PGM and Base metal Potential, not to mention the high-grade silver-cobalt veins that will be discovered during this new wave of exploration.

No folks, the Cobalt Camp is far from dead. It's just been waiting for someone to come knocking on it's door! LISTEN - I think there's someone's coming to the door now.
